Rich in history and heritage, The cherokee
reservation
is a must on any traveler of the
Smoky Mountains,
visit list.
The cherokee indians arrived in
the smoky
Mountains around 1000 A.D.. They
were the first to name
the area. The name they gave it,
" Shaconage " means the
place of blue smoke. They were mystified
by the smoke,
and many legends arose as a result.
Cherokee has many
artifacts contained in its museum.
a lot of the articles
are very old, and some date back
some 10,000 years.
many of the cherokee we know today
are derived from
the eastern band. They were the
group of cherokee that hid
from the the removal act, signed
by then president Andrew
Jackson, which forced the removal
and relocation of some
16,000 indians. Only 12,000 were
thought to have survived
the exile into oklahoma along the
trail of tears.
Many cherokee today still embrace
the ways of there
ancestors on the reservation today.
and in The Oconaluftee Indian Village
you can see
handmade art being done the same
way
they were done so many years ago.
After you visit around
town, you may want to check out
the new Harrah's Cherokee Casino.
